Synthesis of derivatives of imidazo[4,5-b] pyridine: Novel sulfur contained side chains for macrolide antibiotics

Two series of novel derivatives of imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine were synthesized. These compounds could be used as side chains of semisynthesised ketolide antibiotics. The side chains have free amine group which can attached to ketolide core. Macrolides with this kind of side chains will show obvious activities against erythromycin-resistant strains. The structure of the side chains was confirmed by ¹H, ¹³C NMR, MS, HMBC spectra.
